Animal nutrition is by far the most controversial and polarizing topic out there when it comes to caring for our pets. Even pet food manufacturers have admitted to changing their products, not for the benefit of the pet, bu to better meet the popular opinions and even false expectations that owners have in regards to their pets dietary needs. With these new misconceptions coming out yearly and a constant change in perception, it is nearly impossible for pet owners to receive consistent, reliable information that they can trust.
Luckily, we are here to help. With our thorough understanding of anatomy, energy and nutrient requirements, and education we are able to cut through all that noise and provide our clients with proper nutritional guidance free of marketing and misleading advertisements. We are also happy to say that we have a Certified Companion Animal Nutritional Consultant on staff Mondays, Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
One of the biggest 'lies' that pet food manufacturers tell us is that their food is 'appropriate for all life stages'. We know that a baby's needs are different that a toddlers who is most definitely different than that of a teenage boys... It is the same for our pets. As they age and they growth slows, their nutritional needs change, just like ours.
We stock a selection of life stage appropriate diets in different flavours, canned and dry forms to provide your pet proper nutrition without compromising variety and flavour.
One of the most common conditions facing pets today is obesity. In a 2014 study performed in the United States, it was determined that 58% of owned cats and 53% of owned dogs were overweight. As we are familiar with our own health, weight can be a contributing factor in many medical conditions.
By performing a Morphometric Measurement of your pet, we are able to determine their personal ideal body weight. this way we are able to set realistic expectations and tailor weight loss programs designed specifically for your pets specific needs. It also allows us to avoid putting pets in boxes, saying that all cats should weigh the exact same thing or that all dog breeds should look a certain way. We can avoid those generalizations that prevent us from providing a truly accurate assessment of every individuals needs.
Once we know your pets ideal weight, we can ten determine how many kilo-calories they need to take in each day based on their age, energy requirements, gender and neuter state, etc. With a few calculations and a half hour of your time we lay out a plan that is realistic and achievable to help your pet live a healthy life.
It is important to remember that while we do often recommend weight loss diets which we have in clinic, it is not always the best choice. For cats that are incredibly picky eaters or dogs that have food allergies switching to a new diet can be a huge challenge. If you are coming in for a Morphometric Measurement ans weight assessment with our certified nutritional consultant, please bring along with you the bag of the food you are currently feeding that so the food can be assessed.
Of course, as a veterinary clinic we also stock Prescription diets. Nutrition plays such an important role in general health, but we can take it one step further by managing or even treating some conditions with dietary changes. We can provide an appropriate diet for most conditions, and may make suggestions for your pets long term maintenance following a disease diagnosis. Ultimately, with the right tailored nutrition we can target certain organs that may be under stress and provide them with additional support and protection using a blend of vitamins and minerals.
Along with our prescription diets we also carry a variety of supplements that can used to help with joint health, liver and kidney function, and so much more. No matter what the condition, we can help guide to the right diet for your pets needs.
